Competition

a raw hummingbird

Competitors include young adults books that are considered to be bildungsromans[1] (Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger), books for young adults that address addiction (Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines by Nic Sheff (Jan 6, 2009)), sexuality, psychotherapy, adolescents and spirituality with a creative (non)fiction approach (Go Ask Alice by Anonymous), and ‘edgy’ young adult literature (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young-adult_fiction#Edgy_content).   Other examples are found by searching on Amazon.com for ‘Go Ask Alice’, ‘young adult addict’, and ‘young adult sexuality’.

Assessing a raw hummingbird’s Competition

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) reported that in 2009, ‘[H]ardbound books in the children and young adult category fell 5.0% to $1.7 billion while their paper-bound equivalent grew 2.2% to $1.5 billion.’[2]

In order to establish a niche for a raw hummingbird and its sequels, our brand will glean insights from the author profiles, websites and marketing schemes of national best sellers and then speak directly from our specific brand and mission.  a raw hummingbird has a notable niche in that it is the true story of a living woman who transformed her past adolescent delinquency into a current day organization devoted to the mental health needs of adolescents.  Also, a raw hummingbird speaks to adolescents directly and communicates that they are not alone, reveals the nascent beginnings of a community leader, and shows how anyone can claim beauty, no matter how difficult such an action might initially seem.

Journal to Save Your Life

  • Competitors ~ Guided Journals

These hard-copy, static, competitive products lack the emotional draw and the flexibility that Journal to Save Your Life will embody.  Journal to Save Your Life is a part of a cohesive mission that speaks to the teen demographic explicitly, demands the individual to ‘get real’, and challenges each individual to be true to themselves – not to a societal standard of success, beauty or womanhood.  Journal to Save Your Life is a novel concept and not one that is embodied in any of these competing products.

3. Live Journal – http://www.livejournal.com

Wikipedia: “Live Journal (LJ) is a virtual community where Internet users can keep a blog, journal or diary.  LiveJournal’s blogging features include those found in similar blogging sites (multiple authors, commenting, calendars, and polls). However, LiveJournal differentiates itself from other blogging sites by its WELL-like features of a self-contained community and some social networking features similar to other social networking sites.”

Assessing J2SYL Competition

All of the above online organizations provide specific services in effective and impressive ways.  TWLOHA incorporates celebrities into their campaigns better than almost any prevention and awareness program.  Trevor Space keeps its integrity intact by providing its services for free – for exclusively queer youth.  LiveJournal provides a platform for people to create their own communities and keep journals in intuitive ways.

Indie-Pen-DENT! Community has the ambition of generating as much interest around Journal to Save Your Life for female adolescents as TWLOHA has for their demographic of those wrestling with suicidal ideation.  We also intend to partner (or cross-advertise) with organizations such as Trevor Space.  By doing so, we intend to recruit participants for our services and help expose partner organizations to our own community.  We may use LiveJournal as our platform.

Finally: Our Niche.

To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA), Trevor Space and Live Journal all offer similar services to the demographic Indie-Pen-DENT! Community wishes to speak to during the launch of it’s to initial projects, a raw hummingbird and Journal to Save Your Life.  A description of each of these groups is given below, followed by an overall competition assessment.
